Here is an updated picture of him. This is, in my opinion, the cutest one we have thus far. It is also, I think, the first one that shows him smiling.

My Christmas present this year was a Magellan 4040 GPS device. This thing is really cool. It has a 4.5 inch screen. Has bluetooth so I can make and take calls over it (through my cell phone) and has a nice text-to-speech function that works great so it speaks street names. Cool thing is, I got it for $300 at Radio Shack. This is really a low price for a unit with these features on it.

I have already hacked this thing, so now it has a fully function media player on it also. It plays great looking movies and has excellent sound. Supports tons of media formats.

Here are the complete specs of this device:

Yep, you read that headline right, my dad set my car on fire!

Okay, so this is what happened:

I was coming home from school and called my mom and told her my oil light was flashing on and off every now and then. She told my dad who was with her, both in the town I was coming upon, about it and he said to meet them at wal-mart and he would put more oil in my car. Well when I got there he was already coming out of the store with the oil. My car had only been off for a minute once he lifted the hood.

Basically it was dark and he missed the hole a bit with the oil. It ran down the very hot engine, I guess from not having oil it makes them burning red hot, and it almost immediately broke out in flames. My car’s engine, towards the back, from one side to the other was totally on fire!

Luckily there was snow on the ground and my dad promptly started throwing snow all over the engine. After about a minute (yep it burned for at least a minute) he put the fire out. Okay, here’s the amazing part… my car still runs perfectly fine! Or at least as good as it did before the fire.

Kind of weird for my engine to be on fire for a good minute yet still run, at least in my opinion. Either way, my dad is now barred from putting oil in my car ever again. Next time, I will take it to the shop.

Bailee really is taking to Pierre fine, trying to play with him all the time. However, Pierre (who is naturally scared of anything that moves) is taking it slow, but they did chase each other around earlier today. This was a great sight to see as we didn’t know how Pierre would respond.

I haven’t posted in a while mostly due to my site upgrade that took a lot longer than I expected. The problem there was the update broke many features I have on my site and really messed up my CSS (the stylesheets that define how to site appears). Unfortunately, it took me about a week to fully figure out all these problems. Normally it would never take me that long to fix something, but since I didn’t write the code to the backend of my site (which is WordPress of course) I have a little bit of problems figuring out their code.

So here is a single post of things I should’ve written in their own posts already this month.

October 5th – Happy Birthday to My Site

My site turned 2 years old on October 5th. This is actually not when I first opened this site, but I call it the official birthday to my site because its the day I switched it over to jeremyjefferson.com. Formally before this, for like 3 months, it was at another address and wasn’t a very pretty site at all.

Since the birth of my site on October 5th I have had over 500,000 views. I have posted about 170 posts since then also.

October 8th – Happy Birthday to Me

October 8th was my birthday. I turned 21 years old, and no I didn’t go get drunk since I don’t drink . Not much more to really say about this.

I will also update later today or in the next couple days on a few more things that have happened. Including the status of my new PC and a new member to our family! So check back later.

The cpu is an Intel Duo Core 2.66Ghz CPU. I plan to overclock this to 3.2Ghz. I have already bought Artic Silver 5 to protect the cpu along with a $40 cpu cooling fan. Below is a nice picture of the box for the CPU (I know, kind of pointless) and a picture of the fan. On the bottom is my motherboard. Oh, and I also already have the case, which arrived today. All is pictured below.
I’m planning on buying some of the RAM this week so I can boot this thing up to ensure its all working. Everything has at least a 3 year warranty with the motherboard coming with a lifetime warranty.

Well, I have decided to build myself a computer. I was going to get a new desktop next year with my tax refund, but I decided to slowly buy parts to build my own PC as the money becomes available. Currently I already have a Motherboard and a Case.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PARTS I HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT
(Will be updated as I buy the parts)

My goal is to build a computer, over time, that I can not afford. Well, unless I do it this way and buy it part by part over a few months time.

My current minimum specs for this pc are:

2GB Ram

2.6Ghz CPU

2 Hard drives

That’s it really. I expect the final cost to be around $1000. I don’t plan on having the computer fully built until early next year most likely, but I should have it operational within a month or so. All I still need to get to have it running is a CPU and RAM. Actually a hard drive to, but I could boot from a flash drive if I wanted to test the stuff out. Will probably have a hard drive by that time however.

As you probably know if you have taken the time to read through my blog, I do a lot with eBay and PayPal. The other week I found out about the PayPal Security Key from Security Now (A TWIT Podcast). Once you get one of these and activate it on PayPal or eBay (or both), it will append a 6-digit number to the end of your password. Cool thing is, this 6-digit code changes every thirty seconds!

Click here to see a picture

The Security Key (no bigger than an average flash drive) will show you what your current code is. This protects you from all kinds of attacks. For example, lets say you enter your ebay or paypal login information and someone sees you enter all of it (by watching over your shoulder or using spyware/keyloggers), including your security code. No problem for you, because the code is only valid for 1 login. Once you login with it, the code changes, even if the thirty seconds is not up.

How about phishing sites. Lets say you accidentally fall for one of these. If you do, no problem. Hurry over to PayPal or eBay and login and the code will change (theirs will no longer be valid). I would change my password if this happens though also. Even if you don’t do that though, the phisher has 30 seconds to get to paypal and login. This is a slight security risk though, as anyone could automate this process with a bot. I’m sure PayPal and eBay though monitor people who try to login many times with different login information.

Those are just two great advantages to it.

So how does it work? Well, I can tell you how I think it works…

The device has an internal clock and runs a special algorithm (unique to your key) based on the current time. When you activate it, buy giving paypal/ebay your SN for the device, they associate the correct algorithm to your account so they know what the current 6-digit code should be whenever you to try to login.

To fix the problem of the device losing/gaining time (as all computers do) their system learns your offset (how much time your device is off) when you login. They can take your code and say, hmm…he normally takes 5 seconds to give us his code, took 7 seconds this time, lets log that…hmm took seven seconds this time also…I think his device has gained two seconds, log it.

That’s my take at it, I’m sure someone could give us a much better explanation. Either way, I do know this. 6 digits = 1 in a million chances of someone who knows your password to get your key right at any given point. Well, almost. Really they have a 1 in 999970 chance (as if you think about it, 30 codes are valid at any given point in time.

So do you want one? Just tell PayPal. It only costs $5 (which covers the shipping costs). They are basically giving them away, you just pay shipping. Visit this link to get yours: http://paypal.com/securitykey/

They ship them USPS First Class from CA. Took 8 days from the day I ordered mine to get it. They say 6-10 days I believe. My suggestion, get it. Even if you do get it, you do not have to use it.

Oh, and as for the battery. Although the battery can not be changed, PayPal says it will last 3-5 years. When you need a new one, they will replace it at no cost to you.

with the 14,000th spam comment attempted to be posted on my site this week, I believe it was time to try to block the bots a little more. Even though my spam protection has yet to let any spam comments actually get on my site, I have implemented a banning feature into my site. For now on, if anyone posts a comment that is determined by me or the filter to be spam, they will be banned from the entire site.

However, anyone who does get banned can just answer a simple captcha security image and regain access to the site. Only until 3 spam comments are posted by the same IP is the IP permanently banned from the site. I hope this works out great for my site and improves the comment area of my site.

Anyone wanting this script that runs wordpress, just contact me and I’ll hook you up.

This week I upgraded my network’s router to a bit more expensive router. So now, I’m going to give it my official review. By the way, this is the first type of post like this for my site; one where I review an item I bought. So stick with me, and lets give it a go. By the way, feel free to leave your opinions if you use this router, or ask questions by posting a comment if you are looking into getting this router or need help. I can gurentee you that I will respond within a day or so.

First off is the speed (or throughput). This router seems to do a great job in this regard. Although I have not done tests to see what LAN network speeds are through this router, I do know that WAN throughput is at 100% my alloted speed by my ISP. This is a big plus in my opinion. I have noticed that LAN traffic has speed us considerably also. Wired clients are connecting each (all 3 currently connected) at blazing 100mbit speeds. I didn’t let this file transfer finish, but according to windows it was going to take 1-2 minutes to transfer a 671MB file across my network. This is a huge improvement over my old router (WRT54G) in which that would’ve took at least 5 minutes or more.

Wireless is a big issue also. It appears to have a great range (of course this depends on your environment) and you should experience close to 54mbit speeds if your wireless client has a G card and is within 50-100 feet (typical for any connections from within your home).

I read about people complaining about this thing getting really hot on CNET. I can tell you they are lieing. It does get hot, but so do all computers (which is what a router is). You can’t expect anything this small with a computer in it to run cool. I can tell you this though, its no hotter than my modem (around the same size that I have been using for 2+ years) and is no where near as hot as some of my external USB hard drives get. One thing is for sure, it does not get so hot that you can’t even touch it. If it does, you probably got a defected unit or you are blocking the vents.

I did experience one lockup. Its been running for four days now and on the night of day 1 it locked up. Since then it has been fine. The nice thing about this router is it will tell you if its locked up (for easy diagnostics) by a status light on the front panel. I don’t know what caused it to lock up, but I don’t believe it to be a bad thing yet as it has now been three days running nice and fine.

The logging is the thing I hate about this router. If you want to keep logs you must have them emailed to you. Expect 20 or so emails a day as these logs fill up fast. It needs either support for an external logging client or a bigger flash chip. Either way, Hotbrick did not succeed in this area.

Here are some other greate features of this router:

It will remember who has connected to it, giving you a nice database to manage your network clients with.

Supports up to 5 user groups who can each have their own setting in the firewall, internet access/restrictions, URL blocking, and more.

Has a great internet setup wizard to get you on the internet with no problems at all

Has built in DDNS update client

Has a schedule to decide when certain restrictions or policies should be enforced

Automatically updates system time

Small design, great power

There is my short review of this router. I’d be happy to hear any comments from people who have this router. Please, share your reviews with me.

Well, I found out today that I should never assume I know how to install large things such as Air Conditioners. The other week it really got hot all of a sudden so I took the liberty of installing my AC myself. Took me all of five minutes and I had my room cooling down. I thought I had it secured good, especially since it has stayed put for almost two weeks now.

Well, at least until I came home from work this morning. I found my window open, and my AC gone. Turns out it took a nasty 6-7′ fall onto my parents roof. Amazingly, it still works, and I don’t believe it caused any damage to the roof.

Turns out I forgot to install three of the four screws that secures the part to the AC that secures it to the window. The screwed I did put it finally gave and could no longer hold the AC all by itself. It stripped right out and the AC took the fall. I woke up my mom and dad to tell them, and my mom said she wondered what that loud bang was she heard about an hour or so before.

My dad and I got it back in the window, off the roof, and plugged it in and it still worked. So we reinstalled it, correctly, and now its cooling my room again.

Looks like I dodged a nice $100 bullet.
